Windows Migration Strategies and Tools

Not only does Xandros make it easy to install, configure and manage Linux servers, but it also helps you migrate from Windows Servers to Linux. Xandros Server Standard Edition includes powerful migration tools to help you migrate Windows user accounts and services from Windows to Xandros.

Migrating Windows users to Xandros

To streamline the migration of a large number of Windows user accounts, Xandros Server includes a Migration Tool. The tool consists of two parts. The first part is a Windows export wizard which can be found in the /Windows/Migrate folder of Xandros Server Applications CD #1 (view the html file in this folder for instructions). The second part is the import tool which can be found as an xMC menu item under `File’. Export all Windows users to a single file and import the file via xMC.

When the import is finished, all your Windows users become Network Accounts.

Migrating a Windows-based DHCP Server

Migration is as simple as setting up a DHCP server in Xandros Server and disconnecting your Windows-based DHCP Server. Your users will quickly have access to the network via Xandros Server’s DHCP server.

Migrating a Windows-based DNS server

Xandros Server allows you to manage Xandros-based DNS server. You can easily migrate Windows-based DNS servers to Xandros Server via an easy-to-use setup Wizard. The Wizard will guide you through the process of duplicating the zones and records from your Windows-based DNS server to Xandros Server’s DNS server.

Migrating a Windows-based file server

Migrating Windows file servers to Xandros Server is easy! Simply move the File share data stores over from the Windows machine to the Xandros Server and share those same sources using xMC.

Migrating a Windows-based FTP site

Migration from a Windows-based FTP site is a quick and easy process. Simply set up an FTP site through the Wizard, drag and drop the files and messages from the Windows computer to the Xandros computer with Xandros File Manager. Once you have tested the new site, you can delete the files from the Windows computer.

Migrating from a Windows-based VPN server

Xandros Server’s VPN Server plug-in uses the same PPTP protocol as Windows, so migration is a painless process. You can simply copy the settings from your Addressing, Authentication and Name Resolutions tabs in your Windows-based VPN to Xandros Server and migrate the VPN user accounts to the Network Accounts plug-in.
