It’s nothing sexy, but it works for me. Smile

The thing I liked most about Xandros was the file manager (I bet that was true for you too! Wink ). So a couple of weeks ago, we began development of a new app that will help alleviate my Xandros file manager withdrawls (even though it’s not a file manager in and of itself). Cool

My applications Dev (sqlpython) is currently working on an app that contains one tab with a control panel that allows users to change what belongs in the control panel, and which category each applet belongs to. The other tab will contain a "my computer" style app that will allow users to interact with their systems and devices more akin to the way Windoze does it.

The work has only just begun on it, so RevLinuxOS 2.0 will take a while to get released. I’m working on learning a new language that will allow me to create a nicer GUI for the Remastersys installer.

The community is small and posting activity is slow, but we communicate regularly with the community to make sure they aren’t frustrated due to not knowing what’s going on. Smile

Anyway, that’s what I’ve been up to since I moved on from Xandros.
It’s nice to see some old friends are still hanging around with each other. Cool

Geeky Dude, I was just over at RevLinux today to see what was happening. I didn’t see any updates on the home page so I thought the project was dead. Glad to see you are still working on some things. Are you still basing it in Kubuntu? At one time I was vehemently apposed to anything Ubuntu, but I’m starting to come around on the Buntu idea.

hello,

i have still xandros premium home edition 4.0 on my computer. however for sufing over the internet it is becoming more and more difficult. an outdated firefox 2.0 is the reason for it and not able to update it anymore to recent releases.

i have a pentium III, 667Mhz, 1Gb memory, Riva TNT2Pro card 32Mb and Xandros was feeling very comfortable on this machine.

i have tried recent weeks different distro’ s like Kubuntu,PClinuxOs,Mageia but i am everytime encoutering freezes of the machine and was responsing very slow on this ‘old’ desktop.

i am missing the fact that xandros is not around anymore for new updates on a very solid product.

i wish that they startup xandros again.

regards,

Willem

ps. any suggestions for a linuxdistro for my computer perhaps ?

I think a lot of us still have a little place in our heart that hopes Xandros will introduce a new desktop distro. I think we would be very quick to forgive Xandros for past mistakes and would purchase it. But alas, it ain’t happening.

As far as your machine goes, you should look at something with a lighter desktop environment like XFXE or LXDE. PCLinuxOS offers either of these options along with openbox. I think they should all run better than KDE. Also look at Antix (Mepis based) or dare I say Xbuntu. Anather well respected distro for older machines is Puppy. One if the Puppy distributions might be bet for you. Check out Wary Puppy.

hello Fargo,

thank you for the reply.

it may be wishfull thinking that Xandros will have a new spinoff, but it looks from the outside world that the whole infrastructure is there around these days.

the xandros website and products is still online, xandros networks for updating software once installed ( it is only not uptodate at the moment) is still working. who knows…………..

i will certainly look at the suggested sites you have given.

i have a question but i will ask this in a new topic in the forum for i want not to pollute this topic.

regards,

Willem

Yeah I looked on Xandros website and thought it was pretty poor business practice to be selling such an old operating system. I didn’t think they even supported it any more. But if your saying they still have all the repositories up, I guess they have the right to sell it. Even though I don’t believe that Debian is offering any security updates any more. I may just have to install X4 again to see if they do infact still have updates online. But even if they do, charging $99 for such an old OS is not fair pricing.

hello Fargo,

i have read somewhere in this forum that selling products was stopped. so, i think that even when you ordered something it will not be shipped.

i find it only interesting that all is still in place and luckely also this forum is up and running and still active with new posts.

the last updates i have seen are from mid 2007 in xandros network.

greetings,

Willem

At first, I really liked Xandros, then as time dragged on it became clear that they were never going to upgrade the OS. Was this a result of Xandros getting into bed with Microsoft? Stranger things have happened. Finally, the install broke and I couldn’t justify re-installing it, so I downloaded and installed Ubuntu. Installing a new OS is always a pain in the rump, installing and learning new software, etc., but once I was over that hump I became a real happy camper.

This is the same thing that happened to my favorite office suite — Lotus Smart Suite. Lotus Development sold out to IBM. Anyone with experience using IBM software will tell you the same thing — IT SUCKS! The problem was, that Smart Suite didn’t suck but IBM just never upgraded it and let it die on the vine. Oh, they still sell it. You’re just getting a 10 year old office suite. Same here with Xandros. There’s really no reason to keep using it. Admit defeat and move on.
