I got my copy of "Linux Mint 12 Lisa" today. My first encounter is bad. I could not get it to recognize my modems. I have one inside the computer and one going through the serial port. I also have a USB Modem, but I will have to wait until tomorrow after work. I will try again.

SO far Xandros 4.5 OCE is my best bet for the most modern distro I can use. It recognizes everything. Just can’t use the FireFox 2.0 on some sites. It has problems with Facebook for sure.

My second choice would be SuSE 12.1 and using Puppy to access the net. I’m doing that now with Xandros for some sites.

Heres another way to install an newer version of Firefox:
http://www.pcds.fi/downloads/applications/internet/firefox/xandros/
Dont forget to check the Howto-install-Firefox.html first.

This method isnt perfect, but it works. So, no need to download
and install the entire servicepack K2SP just for Firefox.

You said it wasn’t perfect. Does this break something?

No – it doesnt brake anything Rolling Eyes .

"Not perfect", just means that Firefox
will (only) use Clearlooks theme, so you
wont get this Firefox style

I might try this. Any certain order to install this? It doesn’t say unless the package order in which they are listed. I will probably follow that.

You can’t use the package manager to install this?

The longer I keep Xandros 4.5 on my desktop the more I am making it home. I really don’t fully understand why they did not keep Xandros going. It looks like their main focus was on the Server and this was just an idea they toyed around with. I had Xandros 2.0 years ago on an old computer. I guess I am back, just a little too late.

There is a wealth of information here in the forums.

Yes – you can use Xandros Networks (as well)
for installing all needed DEB packages.

Retro, there won’t be a reason to have Xandros on your machine soon. The browsers are switching to HTML 5.0 support, and unfortunately…Firefox 3.5.1 doesn’t offer that.
Also, Flashplayer keeps updating, tot he point that some websites that require flash do not work.

Finally, the old drivers for Xandros graphics do not work well with newer graphics cards. Ultimately, the graphics situation, and the cd burning thing (you can only burn at 2X…and only cd’s, not DVD’s.) led me to leave Xandros. I still install it every once in awhile to play around with it, but I never keep it.

That is a problem for me. The newer versions of linux has trouble with dial-up modems for some reason. It is as if that part is broken. My rig is 10 years old, or older, so I do not have a problem with newer graphic cards. I built it myself around linux. My preference is SuSE 12.1, but the dial-up part does not seem to work. Xandros works great with my system. Whatever I do, it seems that I will have to use some form of Puppy Linux to access the internet. Legacy OS 2 is what I am using right now other than Xandros. Or I do use Puppy Linux 5.2.5. Too bad that Legacy OS 2 does not configure my printer, or I would have that as my OS. SuSE 12.1 configures everything on my system except it has a problem with dial-up modems. I do not have permission for some reason to configure. I have yet to figure it out.
My needs are very simple. I do not need the frills and thrills of a heavily graphic oriented GUI. Icewindows would do me as I used Libranet on an old Thinkpad for years until it blew a gasket, and was very satisfied.
I probably need a newer printer, HP Destjet 632c. My Scanner is a Canoscan LiDE 20. I’m using an old FIC motherboard with a AMD Athlon XP 2200+ (1804MHz) and 768MB of physical memory. It is enough for me and what I do. I have an internal modem and an exterior serial modem. Both work great with an older version of Linux.

I will probably keep trying different versions of linux until I settle down with a main work station and access the net with something like Puppy running from a disc or duel boot.

Have no suitable machine prepared to test latest Firefox, Opera
or Flashplayer on Xandros Desktop 4.5 with K2SP right now. But
Firefox 3.6, Opera 10.5 including Flashplayer 10.3 works very well.
Note: you dont need K2SP for Flash 10.3 either. Heres necessary
package and updates for that.

DVD-burning isnt restricted on XD 4.5 – plus heres K3B and Nero
that can be used (obtain serialkey from Nero). Remember that many
applications compiled for Debian 5.0 (Lenny) also works with K2SP
servicepack applied.

Where do I get Opera 10.5? I have been Googling but so far all I have found are dead links.

I would rather keep Xandros 4.5 as long as I can, it is so user friendly. I have yet to find a disro that can come close to matching it.

Sorry, my mistake, did mean Opera 10.60

Opera 10.11 was the last version that worked with XD 4.5
without K2SP. Heres Opera versions from 10.00 and up.

Doctore Thanks!!
Looks like Opera 10.11 has solved all of my Internet problems I was having. At least for right now. Awesome, Opera is working great.
Again, Big Thanks! I am very happy.
Very Happy

Just a bit of an update about where I have ended up with my OS. My situation has changed. I am now able to have Broadband Net service and it is cheaper than the dial-up I was using. I needed Xandros to recoginize my wifi adapter, but it would not. I really could not find out what it needed to work. So………….. I begin experimenting again. And Linux Mint Lisa was the only one that recoginized everything and I got it working well. And that is where I am at today. I wished I was still with Xandros 4.5. But it left me with no choice. Sad

I may try getting an old coomputer working on it at some point.
