I’m TOTALLY new to wireless; and have a question about a setup configuration.
I have wired network cards. So…..Will this work?
WiredNIC—-WirelessRouter <—-> WirelessRouter—-DSL-modem
The idea is to use the WiredNIC/WirelessRouter combination as a substitute for a wireless card. What I’m unsure of is this: Will the two routers communicate as needed?
TNX in advance for any info. |

Sure you are just describing a standard DMZ firewall setup..
Just make sure the connections are
Modem to First Router WAN port …(Not Lan)
First Router LAN port to….
2nd Router WAN port
2nd Router LAN will be the ESSID that you Name as default for Wireless Nic..
Also name the 2nd router IP as the Wireless Gateway IP…
The 2nd Router is set to DHCP mode and will handout IPs
The First Router can be set to hand out a Narrow list of Static IPs
WIth this method you can even attach a Computer to the First Router and open up port 80 and use it as a Web Server with Apache Web server running.. _________________

This part is intended as the wireless part of the setup…. First router to second router – over the air-waves.
Reason for this configuration is that I had originally bought a wireless PCI card which is not supported in linux, and – since routers (TRENDnet TEW-432BRP) are cheap – -and since with the wired-NIC/wireless-router combination I can use more than one computer with it (all 4 have a RJ45-based network card inside) — then I can wire each NIC to the router’s RJ45 connectors; go over air to the second router whose WAN port ties to a DSL modem.
Another thing not clear to me:
Can this setup also be used as a mini hot-spot – for visiting wireless-enabled notebook computers?

Hmmm never had the second ROUTER wireless to the first… I suppose you could alter the second in the setup page.. You see wired the Routeres have LAN and WAN ports..and you want to connect Routers through a WAN connect _________________

Configuring wireless is a process is to identify and ensure the correct driver for your wireless device is installed ( available on the installation media, so make sure you install them), and to configure the interface.
Linux Wireless Support.
Ubuntu Wiki.
These are the two ways to find the wireless hardware setup. |
