Xandros Announces First Platform Independent Application Store for ARM Technology-based Smartbooks

New CNR facility enriches user experience and opens new market for mobile OEMs, carriers, and third-party vendors

August 26, 2009

New York, NY – Xandros today announced the first fully customizable and brandable application store for next generation ARM® technology-based smartbooks. The new CNR (“click and run”) solution gives users single-click access to thousands of applications, games, multimedia, and services that extend or update the features of their mobile devices. Providers can deliver end-to-end product support and enjoy recurring revenues from downloadable applications and services. Third-party vendors that contribute software, services and media content to gain immediate access to a fast-growing community of mobile computer users, and benefit from shared revenues on application store sales. The solution supports all ARM technology-based smartbooks and other devices regardless of operating system.

CNR application stores are fully brandable and support integration with back-end billing systems. They come with a complete back-end infrastructure to build a collaborative community with forums, wikis, and blogs, and set up a software marketplace with top 10 lists and filtered browsing by device and category. Intuitive tools provide easy ways to manage device lifecycle by installing and updating operating system and application software, and manage software repositories, web services, third-party releases, and software self-publishing.

“Xandros’ CNR support for ARM technology-based smartbooks is an exciting development,” said Bob Morris, director of Mobile Computing, ARM. “Application stores are essential components of platform ecosystems, and we are pleased to see that Xandros is at the forefront of ARM support, as well as a leader in innovative smartbook solutions.”

“Next-generation ARM technology-based smartbooks are really exciting for us because they join the portability and always-connected capabilities of smartphones with the computing power, screens and keyboards of full desktop computers,” said Xandros CEO Andy Typaldos. “We are extending our CNR application store support to these compelling new smartbooks, regardless of their Linux variant – whether it’s Xandros, Google Chrome, Android, Ubuntu, or whatever – we create a win-win-win ecosystem for end users, ISVs and service operators alike.”
