How to Burn a DVD
This page provides detailed instructions for burning an installation DVD using the .zip or .iso files you have downloaded.
Checking files after download
Using a check sum program in Windows® or Linux®, you can check that the ISO, ZIP, and PDF files downloaded correctly. This step is optional and recommended. If you have a check sum program already, you can use it. For Windows you can download and use the free winMd5Sum application outlined here.
To check files using Windows
This procedure may not work with Windows 98.
- Download winMd5Sum (0.2 MB).
- Install it by double-clicking the .exe file (0.3 MB).
- Launch it by clicking Start > All Programs > winMd5Sum > winMd5Sum.
- Click the ... button beside the File Name box.
- Browse to the Xandros file to check, and open it. Wait while information is loaded into the window.
-
Copy and paste the appropriate signature from the following table into the Compare box.
- Click the Compare button. A download was successful if the check sums match. If the check sums differ, download the file again.
To check files using Linux
- Open a console window.
- Type md5sum filename, where filename is the name of the file to check. File names are case-sensitive in Linux.
- Press Enter and wait for the check sum to be generated.
- Compare the check sum with the appropriate one in the following table. A download was successful if the check sums match. If the check sums differ, download the file again.
| Signature | File Name |
|---|---|
| 85fb5150e5cb22832b04e6ae574c83a6 | xandros-42-oce-installation.zip |
Unzipping the files
The .zip files are ISO and PDF files that are compressed and need to be unzipped before use. The decompression can be done in Windows or Linux. For Windows, your computer may have integrated unzipping capability or you may need a program such as WinZip®, which includes a free trial period.
To unzip files in Windows
- Double-click the .zip file. If you have software to unzip the file, the file is decompressed. If WinZip is installed, it is launched and you click Extract to unzip the files.
To unzip files in Xandros Desktop
- Right-click the .zip file and select Extract All.
- Select a folder to save it to, and click Save without typing a file name.
To unzip files in a Linux console window
- Type unzip filename.zip, where filename is the name of the file downloaded.
- Press Enter, and wait for the file to be unzipped.
Burning the ISO Image to DVD
Using the ISO file, you will create an installation DVD. The ISO file will be created, or burned, onto the DVD; it will not simply be copied onto the DVD as a single ISO file. Instead, when you burn the file to the DVD, the directories are expanded and copied onto the DVD for use. To create the installation DVD, you can use Xandros Desktop or the CD/DVD writer software included with your computer.
Xandros recommends using good DVD-R media and burning at low speed, for example less than 4x, for best results.
To create an installation DVD using Xandros Desktop 2, 3, or 4:
- Label a high-quality, blank, writable DVD "Xandros Desktop version 4", and place it in the DVD drive (it cannot be a CD drive and the DVD drive must be writable). Or create a DVD label with the Open Circulation Disc Artwork; right-click the link to save the link target file.
- In Xandros File Manager, double-click the .iso file.
- Change the Preferred Write Speed to 4x or less.
- Click OK. The installation DVD is created.
To create an installation DVD using Microsoft Windows:
To create the installation DVD, you can use DVD/CD writer software included with your computer. Or you can download and use DeepBurner, which is a freeware program that is free for personal use. It can be installed in several languages, including English, Czech, German, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, and Spanish.
Xandros recommends using good DVD media and burning at low speed, for example less than 4x, for best results.
To create an installation DVD using DeepBurner:
- Download the DeepBurner (2.8 MB).
- Install it by double-clicking the .exe file. You can install the application in several languages, including Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, and Spanish.
- Launch the application.
- Enable the Burn ISO image option and click Next.
- Click the ... button on the right side of the window and select the Xandros .iso file.
- Insert a high-quality, blank, writable DVD in the drive.
- Uncheck the Delete image after successful burn box so that the .iso file is saved. Select the DVD Drive from the drop-down list, set the Write speed to the lowest speed possible from the drop-down list, then click Burn ISO. The files are burned to the DVD, which takes about 20 minutes at 4x.
- Label the DVD "Xandros Desktop Open Circulation Edition version 4". You can also create a DVD label in DeepBurner with the Open Circulation Disc Artwork. Right-click the link to save the link target file.
Next, you install Xandros Desktop from the installation DVD. Follow the instructions in the Xandros Desktop Getting Started Guide.
